Polly drunk-listens to Tim's Supercollider etudes, part 1

Double bock plus margarita.

#1:

Low frequency rumble with cool panning back and forth.
Melodic fragments up high, emerging intermittently, held together telepathically by the mid ranges of the stacked oscillators.
Ends kind of suddenly.

#2:

Cool stereolocations. Imagining this piece on 20 speakers in a big hall somewhere. Silences make you think it's going to end but it doesn't for a long time, keeps coming up with new sections with common motifs amongst them.

A Note From the Newbie

Well, Polly's been bugging me to write something about being the newest member of the band, so here it is.

I'm not just that, this is all brand new music to me, too. And I'm having a great time! My background is varied: I was in a High School surf/rock band called "The Gents," and I grew up on a musical diet of The Beach Boys, Elvis, The Coasters, The Drifters, The Eagles, CSNY -- you get the picture. Then throw into that mix: Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Sam "The Man" Taylor, Art Pepper, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Charles Mingus (they were all alive and active when I was a teenager). So of course, when I started playing "professionally," in the '70s (after a 10-year musical hiatus, listening, in addition to the above, to Keith Jarrett's bands, Charles Lloyd, and LOTS of Charles Mingus), I was all over the map, but felt comfortable in just about every context (except maybe Country Music and Polka Bands -- both of which I would occasionally play in for lots of money).

Up until last July, when I auditioned for, and was accepted in Reconnaissance Fly, I'd never played the sort of music this wild outfit produces. And I love it -- all of it. I still haven't been able to come up with a way to describe it to my jazz and "other" musical friends -- which says to me that it is unique. And for me to be at a loss for words about anything is pretty rare.

So here I am. A great band, wonderful bandmates, and amazing music.

How's that, Polly?
